The thing that makes modern cars handle accidents so well is the unibody construction that car companies now use. Unibody construction means that the frame and the body of the car are one. That means that if there is damage to the body, usually there will also be damage to the frame. However, unibody frame damage is much easier to repair in modern vehicles than older vehicles.
This is because the frames on modern cars come in pieces. Even if one section of the frame is completely totaled, it doesn’t make the whole frame a total loss. Instead, the damaged section or sections of the frame can be replaced, leaving the undamaged sections of the frame untouched. This makes it a very economical repair process.
At AWCollision we are proud of the high standards we hold towards Service, Quality Work and most of all our Auto Body Repair Warranty. When you take your vehicle to any AW Collision Auto Body Repair location you are receiving the best possible repair and warranty to back it up. AW Collision has an excellent reputation we give every customer a written warranty to protect them.
AW Collision provides this lifetime warranty on all repairs relating to the current loss. It will apply to all items originally estimated — for as long as you own the vehicle. This warranty shall cover defects occurring under normal conditions. AW Collision warrants its paint for the life of the vehicle against: cracking, checking, loss of gloss caused by hazing, chalking or fading, peeling and blistering caused by moisture, provided the refinishing is done over original undamaged factory finishes or over original equipment manufacturer replacement parts. AW Collision reserves the right to correct any problems found with the repair, before paying to correct or replace any items found to be inferior in quality or workmanship. AW Collision will pay to correct or replace any item found to be inferior in quality or workmanship at no cost to you, our valued customer. Also, we will assist you in handling the claims of other manufacturer’s products installed by AW Collision. Specific additional stipulations pertain to the following four parts written warranty hereafter:
This warranty guarantees the work performed by AW Collision so long as said vehicle remains under the present ownership, items on the repair order such as, Sublet Work, or Sublet Labor, are subject to the guarantee of those suppliers. We guarantee that the parts used were manufactured by your original equipment manufacturer unless you were otherwise notified, and so noted on your repair order. Should any questions arise concerning this warranty, AW Collision will need to be informed of the nature of the problem, so it may be corrected. In the event of a claim this warranty must be presented with a copy of the corresponding repair order. No warranty work will be performed prior to a review by our management team. This warranty shall only apply if the defects occurred under normal driving conditions and not where any vehicle has been subjected to accidents, negligence, abuse, or misuse. Specifically excluded from this limited warranty are incidental costs, such as towing fees, car rental charges, travel expenses, rust through metal scratches, gravel or rock chips to paint, or assemblies and components which are not specifically covered by this written warranty, nor are consequential damages such as damage to other assemblies and components resulting from a defective part or installation of such part installed or repaired during the repair included in this written warranty. Other exclusions include: sublet work as listed on the repair order, tires, batteries, mechanical parts, wiper blades, oils, and air conditioning; however, these items may be covered by the respected manufacturer’s warranties. AW Collision shall not be responsible for loss of use, loss of time, inconvenience, towing, rental, lodging or loss of business, or any other incidental or consequential damages.
This Written Warranty shall be null and void if the repair is altered, adjusted, or tampered with by any person not authorized by AW Collision. This warranty is not transferable.
This stage of the repair process includes all the techniques necessary to restore the paint surface of the vehicle, for both sheet metal and plastic parts, including:
Color matching the paint on your vehicle is both an art and an exacting science. AW Collision applies paint to the bare shell of the vehicle which is cured at temperatures up to 180-degrees–any hotter and damage will be done to the car’s mechanical, electrical and interior systems. The colors used by auto manufacturers may vary widely on the same models painted with the same color. Variations in shading and coloration depend on whether your car was painted at the beginning or end of an assembly line run of paint.
This is further complicated by the fact that most new cars are also painted with a “two-coat” or “tri-coat” paint process, where mica, pearl, or metallic materials are applied sequentially in the factory finish. These finishes often vary in appearance based on the angle from which they are viewed. For example, a green metallic paint can appear “teal colored” when looking at a straight or flat surface such as a hood, but nearly “black” when looking at a rounded surface such as a fender.
All of these factors make paint mixing, tinting, and blending in the collision repair process even more critical. To properly repair a minor dent of several square inches, an entire panel may need to be painted and the adjacent panels may need to be blended in order to achieve a precise color match. AW Collision specializes in using computer-controlled sensing devices that provide the refinish technician with a precise formula to match the paint color on a vehicle.
With today’s advanced collision repair equipment, paints and repair processes, it is now possible to recapture the original factory look and feel of a car or truck after a collision. When you trust your vehicle’s repairs to AW Collision Centers, you are guaranteed quality workmanship and attention to every detail. To ensure performance, we follow a proven repair process, and offer the following services:
If your vehicle has been damaged in a collision, you probably heard this common misconception: your vehicle will never be the same. Chances are, it wasn’t your insurance company representative or an employee of a collision repair business who said this. That’s because every day collision industry professionals return collision-damaged vehicles to their previous condition - both structurally and cosmetically.
So what does it take to repair your vehicle properly after an accident? Because of today’s complex vehicles and high-quality paint finishes, technicians need to be properly trained in the entire repair process to achieve complete and safe repairs.
The repair process begins when a detailed estimate is prepared, indicating all of the repairs needed to restore your vehicle to proper function and apperance. In some cases, this damage assessment requires removing damaged body panels or other parts. This results in the most accurate initial estimate possible. The parts listed on the estimate are then ordered. The collision repair business and your insurance company should explain whether the replacement parts are new parts ordered from the manufacturer of your vehicle, used parts ordered through an automotive recycler, or new parts manufactured by a company other than the manufacturer of your vehicle. Your collision repair business and insurer can explain the pros and cons of using each of these types of parts.
If your vehicle was hit hard in the collision, the repair facility should use a measuring system that checks specific points of your vehicle structure against dimensions provided by the vehicle or equipment manufacturer. The repair facility will also need to measure your vehicle several times during the repair process to make sure it is within the recommended tolerances. In most cases, this tolerance is a strict as three millimeters – the thickness of three dimes. Some vehicles today require a tolerance no greater than one millimeter.
Whenever appropriate, original parts are repaired. Severely damaged parts need to be replaced. A properly trained technician can repair sheet metal and plastic so that it can be difficult, if not impossible, to find any indication of damage. In some cases, parts not included on the estimate may need to be ordered during the repair process if "hidden" damage is found.
After repairs are complete, the vehicle is ready to be painted. The areas to be painted are first prepared. Repaired areas are finely sanded, primer and corrosion protection products are applied and areas that won’t be painted are “masked off” and protected. The painter then uses a paint mixing system to mix the paint that will match your vehicle’s finish. A paint code on your vehicle provides the starting point, but generally requires a trained eye to match the paint to your vehicle. Often, paint will require "blending," a technique used to facilitate matching the color of your car. The paint is sprayed inside a spray booth designed to keep dust and other contaminants off the new finish.
Once the painting is complete, the vehicle is reassembled with all trim pieces, decals, and stripes. If any new glass is needed, it is usually installed at this point. The wheel alignment will also be checked if the collision damage was severe, if the vehicle spun, or if a tire, wheel, or suspension parts were damaged in the collision. This helps to catch any potential problems with the steering and suspension parts.
Finally, your vehicle is taken to the detailing area for a thorough interior and exterior cleaning. Any minor imperfections in the new paint surface will be removed by polishing and buffing. A final inspection checks that all work meets the repair facility’s standards and the final paperwork is prepared for the vehicle owner and involved insurer.
Throughout this process, the repair business will be in contact with the insurance company handling the claim. The insurer may want to review the estimate and inspect the vehicle before or during the repair process. In some cases, the repair facility may need to obtain insurer and vehicle owner approval before completing additional necessary repairs not included on the initial estimate.
Locating a collision repair business that will follow the above procedures is important for any vehicle owner. Insurers and collision repair business owners alike say the key is looking for evidence of properly trained technicians, such as the Gold Class Professional designation.
